From Awkward to Authentic: Mastering the Art of Relaxation During Your Couples Session

You’re engaged- congratulations! This is such an exciting time in your life, and capturing these moments with a professional photographer is a fantastic way to celebrate your love. But let's be honest, sometimes the thought of being in front of the camera can make even the most confident person feel a little awkward. Don't worry though, I've got some amazing tips to help you feel ready, confident, and totally yourselves during your couples session.

Side Note: Be open and honest with your photographer about any concerns or anxieties you may have leading up to the session. They are there to guide and support you, so don't hesitate to ask for further direction or advice. A skilled photographer will have plenty of experience working with couples and will know how to make you feel at ease. Trust their expertise and let them guide you through the process!

FIRST TIP: LOOK AT YOUR SESSION AS A DATE

Take the whole day off and enjoy each others’ company. Get lunch, grab drinks and make the day special. Your engagement session is going to be so much fun!! Just view it as a time to adventure around a beautiful location with the one you love and a third wheel (me). When it comes to relaxation, it's all about being in the moment. Forget about the camera and focus on each other. Engage in natural conversations, share inside jokes, and let your love shine through. The more authentic and genuine you are, the better the photos will turn out. Trust me, those candid moments are what truly capture the essence of your relationship. Focus on having fun, it makes it sooo much more enjoyable.

SECOND TIP: CHOOSE CLOTHING THAT MAKES YOU COMFORTABLE

I want your engagement photos to look like you all enjoying each others company; comfortable and happy. I want you all to exude confidence in how you feel about yourself and each other! I have created a pinterest board with outfit suggestions you can check out here. Also, wear clothing you don't mind getting a little dirty. Go to your local thrift store and find a new outfit. So basically wear what makes you happy! Your engagement session is a celebration of your love and the exciting journey you're about to embark on. So, embrace the joy and laughter. Dance, twirl, and let loose!

THIRD TIP: HAIR, MAKEUP, AND ALL THAT JAZZ

If you are getting your hair and makeup done for your wedding think about having your trial run for the session. That's one less thing you have to worry about before your wedding!

FOURTH TIP: BE ON TIME

I always schedule sessions at sunrise or sunset so we are working with the prettiest light possible and don't want to miss out on any opportunities to create beautiful images. I don’t want you to feel rushed, so come dressed and ready. We will jump on in, get to know each other, and have a wonderful time!

FIFTH TIP: CHOOSING A LOCATION

When choosing a location think of a place that is special or holds significance to you both. Whether it's the place where you had your first date or a spot that symbolizes a special memory, being in a familiar and meaningful environment can instantly put you at ease. In-home sessions are always beautiful too! If you two enjoy hiking and drinking beer on a mountain top, let's go on a hike! If you love urban vibes, let's go to a city that means something to you and find pretty light and lovely architecture. Be creative, and have fun choosing that spot! This adds an extra layer of personalization to your engagement session.

SIXTH TIP: PRACTICE

Spend some time with your partner in front of a mirror or even take some test shots with your phone. This will help you become more comfortable with how you look and feel in front of the camera. You can experiment with different poses and expressions until you find what works best for you. Remember, the more you practice, the more confident and relaxed you will become.

SEVENTH TIP: BRING YOUR PET

The perfect way to calm nerves, is with distraction! Including the whole family gives you something to do to stay active in front of the camera. I've shot a session outside with a cat (it was pretty wild), so bring any animals you want. Let’s have fun!

EIGHTH TIP: DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE WEATHER

I am inspired by all sorts of light and weather. If it’s the bright sun or dark and moody skies, heck even rain, we will make some beautiful emotional images.

FINAL TIP: HAVE THE BEST TIME!

Engagement sessions can sometimes feel like a whirlwind of activity, with different poses, locations, and outfit changes. But remember, above all, this is only another opportunity for you and your partner to connect and have fun. Take a deep breath, hold hands, and take a moment to soak in the excitement of this chapter in your lives.
