TIPS FOR TRAVELING SOLO as a wedding photographer

Traveling for work, especially as a photographer is such an honor and an enriching experience! Since I often travel alone, safety is always a priority. I wrote some helpful tips to keep your trip safe & enjoyable!

  1. Research your destination before you go - If international, know the local customs, laws and safety risks! Keep updated with news, weather, and any events planned while you are there. Checking government websites to ensure you have the most up-to-date information on the destination is helpful too!

  2. Choose your accommodation carefully - Opt for reputable hotels. Airbnb can be a good option. Make sure to check the listing carefully and that there are many positive reviews left by other travelers. When checking-in, be aware of who is around you. Don’t allow the hotel to announce your room number allowed. Have them hand you the key card with room number written down. Wait until you can go to your room alone, once inside check your surroundings. If there is any hesitation, or something feels off, go directly back to hotel front desk.

  3. Dress - If traveling internationally, check the dress code expectations for your destination. Consider the local vibe and trends. Avoid attention-grabbing clothing or jewelry that can make you stand out as a tourist.

  4. Stay aware of your surroundings - Be mindful of your surroundings. Stay alert and trust your instincts when walking around, eating out, etc. If you post where you are staying/dining, consider sharing after you leave. You don’t want all of social media to know where you are and that you are alone.

  5. Travel during daylight hours - Avoid traveling in unfamiliar areas during the night time, especially alone. Plan your itinerary so that you can arrive at your destinations during daylight hours. If staying at a hotel, see if an airport shuttle is included.

  6. Stay connected - Have a way to stay connected to friends and family if you have an issue while traveling. Share your full itinerary with your clients, wedding planner, and someone close so they know when you arrive, where you are staying, etc. Install tracking apps on your phone to keep loved ones aware of your location. An AirTag in your luggage, and gear is super helpful!

Traveling alone can be incredibly fulfilling and rewarding. Always prioritize your safety, be prepared and keep an open mind for a memorable and enriching experience!
