Daisy Bouquets & a $63 Dress - A Film Photographer Dives into Her Parents' 1980 Wedding

A love story blossomed in the late 70s that could easily find its place in any timeless romance film. Mary Ann Surbaugh and Gary Taylor's wedding was the epitome of vintage charm, their union took place on July 12th, 1980. In an endearing twist of fate, exactly thirteen years later, on their wedding anniversary, I came into this world! As a film photographer with a love for the nostalgic, I couldn't resist diving into their old photo albums, dusting off memories, and sharing their story with you.

Their journey began in college, where they first met. For two years, their love held strong across many miles. And in a move that resembled today's rom-com, my dad popped the question on April Fool's Day. But instead of a conventional proposal, he cheekily did it through my mom's phone bill!

The preparations for the wedding echoed their personalities – authentic, down-to-earth, and focused on genuine emotions. They chose a quaint church near my grandmother's home to exchange their vows and later celebrated their union in the very house my mom grew up in. Every detail of the wedding was handpicked and had a touch of personal charm.

Daisies, being my mom's favorite, were held as she walked down the aisle. She entrusted a local florist to craft a bouquet for her and her bridesmaids. The bridal dress was picked from a small dress shop, and it cost only $63!

The wedding photography was a simple yet heartwarming. My mom's maid of honor’s fiancé was the photographer. Unlike today's trend of capturing every second and emotion, back then, it was straightforward, relaxed, and candid. "Pictures weren't about posing or staged moments. They captured the essence of the day, and I cherish those photographs.”

Their wedding wasn't all about lavish details. It was about two people deeply in love, promising to be by each other's side, surrounded by loved ones.

As I scrolled through the old film images of their special day, I couldn't help but feel the warmth of their love, even after all these years. It's tales like these that inspire me and remind us all of the beauty of simplicity!
